A NATURAL AT GOLDEN HOUR

Using a popular online model search program, I met April, a young woman actively pursuing a modeling career. She had only one prior modeling photoshoot, a themed Halloween event with other models and photographers. Although I wasn’t present at that themeed shoot, in talking with April during our session, she relayed to me how everyone there mistook her for an experienced model. I agreed completely, that due to her natural talent and beauty, I was also a bit intimidated and I also assumed that she was the expert between us.
This session resulted in numerous fantastic photographs, a few of which are included here, all taken outdoors during a perfect day for photography.
The wind was lively and had her struggling with her long flowing hair, but the lighting was what made the day extra special. We shot during the golden hour under a thinly overcast sky, which provided a soft, golden light. The natural lighting, with the sun low and clouds diffusing the light like a giant softbox, was far more forgiving than the dramatic, high-contrast lighting of clear blue skies, which I often find very challenging.
April’s ability to pose effortlessly made our shoot flow smoothly. After I posted a few of her her photos online, I received a touching phone call from her mother, who was emotionally moved by one of the headshot, claiming it was one of the best photo she’d ever seen of her daughter. This feedback was not only heartening but also influential, guiding my photographic focus towards headshots, where I cherish capturing natural expressions and enjoy the intricacies of close-up retouching.
After this session, I was eager to work with April again soon and to try to find other talented local models to help me practice the craft and improve my photography skills.
